New Treasurer Needed

Our current treasurer is standing down from her position on the Institute committee, and so we require a new one to deal with our accounts.
It’s a relatively simple task to deal with, and doesn’t require any formal financial experience.
If you’re interested in getting involved, please get in touch via the contact page, or come along to our next meeting.

Building Work Nearly Complete

The current phase of building work on the Institute is nearing completion. We now have a new entrance at the northern end of the building with full access for people with disabilities.

The new toilets and store room will be in operation very soon once decoration work has been finished. Once funds are available in the future, we will be moving the kitchen to where the new store room now is, complete with improved cooking facilities. The existing kitchen will then become a store room.

We would like to thank the members of the village to turned out on a wet Saturday morning a couple of weeks ago to help dig the trench to allow the water pipe to be replaced.

Flight Level 60Village Gig Raises over £200 for Candlelighters

The Grey Horse in Kelfield was packed on Friday 4th April as Flight Level 60 (pictured) played a great evening of hits.

An impressive £205 was raised for the Candlelighters charity which helps children who are suffering from cancer. Flight Level 60’s Chris Burton, from Kelfield, wants to thank all those who attended and to landlord Pete for providing the venue.  Flight Level 60 came together two years ago through a shared passion for flying; the band has five members, not all pensioners yet, but all are fully qualified pilots at Sherburn Aero Club and when they are not in the skies they can be found practicing hard for their next event.  The Band does about ten gigs a year, largely for the above charity.  If you would like to liven up an occasion of your own and help raise money for a very worthy cause, Chris can be contacted by email:

kvi-logo-newNew Committee Members Wanted for Institute

Kelfield Village Institute is looking for new volunteers to join our committee.

In particular we are looking for someone to take on the role of treasurer. It’s a fairly straightforward role and doesn’t require any expert knowledge of accounting and finance. You’ll just be needed to keep our books up to date with the latest money coming in and going out, and to update the committee with the state of our finances at our meetings which are usually held on the first Tuesday evening of each month.

If money isn’t your thing, you can still get involved. If you’ve got ideas, enthusiasm and a desire to help out with Institute development and village events, we’d love you to get in touch. If you’re interested, send us a message via our contact page.

Great North Air AmbulanceConnor Stainthorpe running Yorkshire Marathon for Great North Air Ambulance after it saved his father Derek’s life

Many of us will remember the terrible motorbike crash on the B1222 involving Kelfield’s Derek Stainthorpe which left him fighting for his life in 2010.

To say ‘thank you’ to the Great North Air Ambulance crew who attended the accident near the village, Derek’s son, Connor will be competing in October’s Yorkshire Marathon to raise funds for the service. He’ll be joined by his friends, Sam Harrison and Liam Broadhead. You can read more about their challenge in this article from the York Press.

To donate, visit Connor’s JustGiving page, or text GNAA93 followed by the amount (£1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10) to 70070.

Cheque presentationDouble Funding Boost For Institute

Kelfield Village Institute has secured £2,000 in funding from two grants to allow us to carry out improvement work on the kitchen, as well as improved lighting and electrical work.

The first, of £1,000, comes from the Eastern Area Community Engagement Forum. Villagers, Nigel Drayton, Claudia Atkinson, Gill Little and Alex Brown were formally given the cheque on 27th November 2013 at a presentation ceremony held at Riccall’s Regen Centre (pictured).

Two Ridings Community FoundationThe second award, also of £1,000 comes from the Two Ridings Community Foundation which works to support and build communities across North and East Yorkshire.

It’s hoped improvements to the kitchen and better lighting and electrical facilities will boost the range of activities we can host, with new social and sporting events planned. In the past three years, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in the level of use of the Institute. We can only sustain this, however, by ensuring we continue to provide good quality facilities, and so we are very grateful for these two grants which will be a huge help towards enabling us to do this.

In total, we’re aiming to raise almost £4,500 for improvement works, and will be continuing to search for further sources of funding.

Adult Fencing Classes Being Considered

Premier Sport.orgOur fencing classes for ages 7 to 11 are now underway, however a number of people have asked us if we could organise fencing lessons for adults too.

This is something we’re now considering, however we need to gauge the level of interest. If you might like to take part (no commitment at this stage), please contact Toby on 07411 381986, or send us a message via Facebook, Twitter or our contact page.
